¡Tú puedes ser un Mentor!
Programa de Mentoría
El Centro Nacional de Servicios Educativos LULAC, implementa un programa de mentoría para niños de 4to a 8vo grado. Nuestro enfoque son los niños de nuestra comunidad cuyas vidas pueden ser enriquecidas a través de la orientación de una persona mayor y más experimentada.
¿Qué hace un mentor?
Un mentor proporciona apoyo a un niño que puede beneficiarse de la orientación y experiencias de la vida del mentor. Es sencillo y también divertido ya que solo tendrá que incluir al niño en las cosas que usted mas disfruta. Le asombraría ver el impacto que un simple juego de baloncesto o el compartir un pedazo de pizza tiene en un niño. Esta experiencia es enriquecedora no solo para el niño si no también para el mentor.
¿Cómo ayuda la mentoría?
Hace que los niños sean más seguros en sus trabajos escolares, además hace que los niños tengan:• 52% menos riesgo a dejar la escuela;• 46% menos riesgo a comenzar el consumo de drogas ilegales;• 27% menos riesgo a comenzar a consumir alcohol; y• 33% menos riesgo a golpear a alguien.
¿Cómo puedo participar?
Llenando una solicitud que estará disponible a través de nuestras oficinas. Luego se hará una revisión de antecedentes, seguida por una sesión de entrenamiento. También le proporcionaremos programas constantes para apoyarlo a usted en este importante rol. Contamos con la colaboración del Departamento de Educación Federal, Office of Safe and Drug Free Schools, Mentoring Organization y Safety Net, quienes están apoyándonos en cada paso del camino.

Puerto Rico Voting Rights
RESOLUTION
WHEREAS, Puerto Rico continues to be a territory of the United States 110 years after being ceded by Spain at the conclusion of the Spanish-American War.
WHEREAS, Puerto Ricans have been U.S. citizens since 1917.
WHEREAS, the U.S. approved for Puerto Rico a Commonwealth providing US Citizens in the Island with an internal organized government system since 1952.
WHEREAS, several actions to resolved the status situation of Puerto Rico has been initiated in Congress without any result at all, including the ones in 1989, 1993, 1998 and most recently, HR 900.
WHEREAS, the U.S. citizens who reside in Puerto Rico are still denied several of the most fundamental of civil rights; such as the right to vote for the President of the United States and for the corresponding members of Congress.
WHEREAS, the denial of the right to vote for those men and women who make decisions that affect the daily lives of the U.S. citizens who reside in Puerto Rico strikes at the very essence of our nation’s democracy.
WHEREAS, the United States Supreme Court continues to validate the legal doctrine that allows Congress to determine which rights and benefits are afforded to the U.S. citizens who reside in Puerto Rico; therefore establishing a class of citizens who are “separate and unequal” as opposed to those who live within the 50 states.
WHEREAS, this untenable situation is made even worse by the lackadaisical attitude of the United States Congress in addressing the need for true self-determination of the U.S. citizens who reside in Puerto Rico.
WHEREAS, a petition has been filed before the Inter-American Commission on Human Rights on behalf of all the U.S. citizens who reside in Puerto Rico against the U.S. Government for violating “The American Declaration of the Rights and Duties of Man” and the “inter-American Democratic Charter” in denying their right to vote for the President and Vice-President of the United States, as well as for their corresponding voting members of Congress.
WHEREAS, the House of Representatives of Puerto Rico has adopted House Resolution 5777, as amended, in full support of this petition filed before the Inter-American Commission on Human Rights.
WHEREAS, a request has been made on behalf of all the U.S. citizens who reside in Puerto Rico before the U.S. Commission on Civil Rights with regards to the petition filed in the Inter-American Commission on Human Rights against the U.S. Government for denying their right to vote for the President and Vice-President of the United States, as well as for their corresponding voting members of Congress.
THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the League of United Latin American Citizens will continue to fully and actively support these and any other efforts by their fellow U.S. citizens who reside in Puerto Rico regarding their legitimate right as U.S. citizens to be able to vote for the President and Vice-President of the United States, as well as for their corresponding voting members of Congress.
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that this Resolution constitute a clear and specific mandate for LULAC, so that, beside a fully support for all appropriate actions been undertook, to fully and actively support and initiate any other efforts on its own, including presenting a legal claim in the Federal Judicial System on behalf of their fellow U.S. citizens who reside in Puerto Rico.

Con reclamos de Igualdad y lucha de Derechos Civiles concluye exitosamente la Convención LULAC en Puerto Rico
San Juan – El Capítulo de Puerto Rico de la Liga de Ciudadanos Latinoamericanos Unidos, LULAC cerró los trabajos de su Convención Estatal aprobando resoluciones que reclaman igualdad de derechos civiles para los ciudadanos americanos residentes en la Isla.
Rosa Rosales, Presidenta de LULAC Nacional, informó que se aprobaron sendas resoluciones reclamando que el gobierno federal atienda con premura la situación de status de Puerto Rico, identificada como la principal causa de trato diferente a ciudadanos en los estados versus los residentes en la Isla. “Tal como lo ha proclamado en su resolución hoy, el Presidente de la Cámara, José Aponte, LULAC Nacional se unirá con firmeza al reclamo de justicia a los conciudadanos residentes en Puerto Rico para que sus derechos sean iguales, ni más ni menos, iguales a los de cualquiera de nosotros, residentes en el continente”, enfatizó Rosales durante su mensaje.
Calentamiento Global, Salud Mental y Declaración de Derechos Civiles
Dos resoluciones para promover campañas educativas fueron aprobadas; una sobre Calentamiento Global y otra sobre Salud Mental. También se aprobó una resolución para, mediante una Cumbre, establecer la Declaración de Derechos Civiles de los Ciudadanos Americanos en Puerto Rico. La resolución, presentada por el Sr. Miguel Miranda y diez Concilios LULAC, promueve la discusión del caso de Puerto Rico entre varios sectores de la sociedad para una vez realizada la Cumbre, se presente un documento con la Declaración de Derechos al Gobierno Federal, a las organizaciones de derechos humanos y civiles y al Gobierno de Puerto Rico para que sea utilizado como herramienta en el proceso de proteger los derechos civiles de los ciudadanos americanos de Puerto Rico.
Nueva Directiva Estatal
Carmen Iris Cruz, Directora Estatal Saliente anunció la elección de una nueva directiva que tendrá la responsabilidad de organizar la Convención Nacional el próximo año. Fueron electos Haydeé Rivera como Directora Estatal, Aldo Rodríguez Vicepresidente, Vanessa Aguilú, Vicepresidenta de Mujeres, Miguel Miranda, Vicepresidente de Jóvenes Adultos y Ricardo García como Vicepresidente de Edad Avanzada. El Presidente de la Cámara, José Aponte, socio LULAC, estuvo presente, al igual que los senadores Roberto Arango, Lucy Arce y José Garriga Picó y el Alcalde de San Juan, Jorge Santini.
LULAC se fundó en Texas en 1929 y tiene sobre 150,000 socios activos a través de los Estados Unidos y sus territorios. LULAC cabildea en el Gobierno Federal y en los Gobiernos Estatales a favor de los ciudadanos americanos de origen hispano y ha luchado por los derechos civiles de los ciudadanos hispanos incluyendo los ciudadanos americanos en Puerto Rico. Su base de operaciones está en Washington DC. El Capítulo de Puerto Rico tiene sobre 60 Concilios y más de 20 años en la lucha por los derechos de igualdad en Puerto Rico.
